Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
How to get rid of feminine odor?
I know all women have a distinct odor but it really annoys me since I’m very big on cleanliness. Has anyone found any ways to disguise the odor?
BTW, I do shave and wash down there…are there any special washes to use?

    • ANSWER:
They sell feminine wipes and washes if you look in the right place. I heard it’s not good to use regular soap/body wash down there because if any of it gets inside of you it’ll get infected and make the smell worse.

  2. QUESTION:
How do I get rid of feminine odors?
My 8 month old daughter has an odor and i don’t know how to get rid of it. she gets a bath regularly and doesn’t go more then two to three hours with out a diaper change. I let her air out every other day or so for roughly 30 minutes or so, but the odor won’t go away.

    • ANSWER:
Your best bet is to ask this in the new born or baby section (if you haven’t already).

I would speak to your pediatrician, and check if there are any over the counter creams for babies.

  3. QUESTION:
How to get rid of feminine odor? I stink down there! HELP!?

    • ANSWER:
Having a little scent is normal, but if the odor is strong, and have smelly discharge, it could be sign of infection. Vaginal douching is not longer recommended because it destroys the good bacteria (that help neutralize the bad one) and alters the normal acidity of the vagina. You should see a doctor.

  4. QUESTION:
how can i get rid of my feminine odor?
even if i clean and wash everyday it doesn’t make any difference. and i also have a clear discharge very often and i just want it all to stop. and like i said i do shower and clean myself everyday. any suggestions that would help?

    • ANSWER:
You don’t, your vagina is supposed to smell like a vagina – musky but clean.

Your vagina is self-cleaning – discharge cleans-out bacteria and dirt, your vagina also naturally has an acidic pH to help kill off harmful bacteria while still allowing healthy bacteria to thrive – thanks to all this your vagina is actually cleaner than your mouth.

But things can go wrong. If your vagina smells bad such as fishy then this is a sign of infection and you need to see your doctor for tests and treatment, washing or home methods for trying to deal with smell won’t help at all, if anything it may make the problem worse.

You do need to clean every day but make sure you’re using water only, wiping between your labia with your hands, never use anything chemical around your genitals such as soaps, washes, wipes, douches, feminine sprays, etc. as these all can effect normal vaginal pH and bacteria so cause infections and temporary imbalances that will cause bad odour.

The same goes for so-called ‘feminine’ washes as although they claim to be ph balanced they can never match your individual vaginal pH or how your pH changes throughout your cycle – these products are made to make money out of women’s insecurities. Douches are also a BIG no-no because as well as effecting pH they can wash out discharge so dry-out vaginal walls leaving them open to damage and infection, and can force harmful bacteria up into your uterus leading to PID.

      Some tips to keep smelling healthy down below;
Healthy diet, practice safer sex, wash daily with water only, avoid wearing panty liners, if you use pads during your periods switch to cotton or cloth, if you use tampons during your period switch to menstrual cups or softcups, avoid tight-fitting or synthetic clothing, walk about often to help air flow to your genitals, and wipe front to back.

  5. QUESTION:
how do i get rid of feminine odor?
    ok
whenever i wipe, or have no clothes on i can smell this odor, kinda like sour milk. it is so strong, but when i am wearing clothes i cant smell anything. is it just me? no one has ever told me or anything
i’m scared if my boyfriend fingers me, it may “stink” his hand or whatever.
how do i get rid of this odor.
it has been smelling like this ever since i stayed the night at a friends house and spilt cereal all over me and i had to sleep in it cause i didnt have any extra clothes. and that was like 6 months ago. i have taken a shower almost every day since then but i still smell like sour milk.
its not a yeast infection. i have taken vagisil 1 day treatment and it never went away, and i used it twice.
my discharge is white and not really thick, so it cant be that
i am NEVER going to use a douche. there are so many infections that can come from that.

    • ANSWER:
A yeast infection would include some sort of physical discomfort in the area…. and since you have not stated anything like that I don’t think that is it.

It kind of depends on your age, how long you have been having or if you have had your period and how sexually active you are.

I would try washing with a warm wash cloth and a mild soap in the morning (in the shower is fine) and before bed. It also might help to get a small travel container of baby wipes so you can use them during the day if you notice the odor.

Some women are a little more “smelly” than others. If you really thing it is a problem, see a doctor.

Whatever you do stay away from the odor sprays made for this, they have been shown to increase certain types of cancer as well as TSS.

  8. QUESTION:
How can I make my feminine odor less potent?
I know that some girls, like myself, naturally produce more yeast – which leads to feminine odor. However, despite using products like Summer’s Eve, it seems I cannot fully get rid of the odor, especially if I’m turned on.

Does anyone know of any natural solutions to make my problem go away?

    • ANSWER:
Your diet affects how your vagina smells, tastes(during intercourse like eating you out), and its health. To make it less potent and more healthy start eating more fruit and yogurt… this will give it a sweet smell and taste. Not to mention the vitamin c and the probiotics will prevent infections. Avoid spices and garlic before sex.

and i have no pain whatsoever
i will NOT use a douche

    • ANSWER:
It sounds like a bacterial infection. You need to see a doctor and get an antibiotic to cure this. Honey, you have had this for six months and it is time to treat it properly. If you leave infections go they can be very harmful to your reproductive organs. It can create PID which is pelvic inflammatory disease. And there can be scarring and leave you infertile. So please, go get this taken care of. Just so you know, it has nothing to do with the spilled milk.

      Best Wishes!

  12. QUESTION:
    feminine odor!! what to do?
I just recently went to the gyno for the first time and he says that it looks like I have bacterial vaginosis and I know that one of the symptoms is a vaginal odor. Well if that’s the case, I’ve noticed this odor for many years now. Probably since 9th grade and I’m 21 now but then I remember going to my mom about it and she wouldn’t let me go get it checked. I’m wondering can someone have bacterial vaginosis for years?

And how to get rid of it? cause I’m afraid that the antibiotics I’m taking now isn’t going to help and it’s going to be like that always and it’s very embarrassing to me.

    • ANSWER:
You can have BV off and on. All BV is, is an overgrowth of the normal bacteria in the vagina. Anything going in or coming in contact with the area can cause the normal flora to get “off.” odor and itching are common. Treatment is usually a vaginal cream or gel. But yes, once treated you can get it again. Avoid douching, leaving pads on for too long, wear cotton crotch panties, don’t wear a wet bathing suit for too long. If in a tub bath, do not bathe and then soak in the tub…bathe, drain the tub, then fill back up with clean water. You do not want to sit in dirty water or water with oils or bubble baths… Those can cause BV.
Good luck..talk with your MD if it continues.

  13. QUESTION:
    Weird feminine odor? Please help?
Okay so I’ve noticed it the past 24 hours. I can’t even really describe it truthfully, but it’s not normally what I smell like down there. It’s just…I don’t know, it’s not the musty odor and it’s not fishy, like what I’ve read about. It’s almost like…a chemical? Pft, that sounds weird, but that’s the best I can do. And I just moved to a place where it’s seriously 80 degrees 24/7, even at night, and I wear underwear at night, so I’m thinking it’s a combination of that and being sweaty all time, so I just wanted to know if anybody had any advice on how to get rid of it or comments about it, etc. And no I don’t have any other symptoms, like burning or weird color or cloudiness or whatever, so I don’t think it’s a UTI. Oh, I’d also like to mention I should be getting my period in a week to ten days and usually things change around that time, but I think it’s the sweating when it comes to this.

    Anyway, thanks in advance. :]

    • ANSWER:
You could have the beginning of a yeast infection. (If you’ve never smelled yeast before, it’s hard to identify a ‘yeasty’ odor.) Being constantly sweaty and damp can contribute to yeast infections. Since it has not yet progressed to itching or discharge, you may be able to get it under control before you need treatment. Cotton underwear or no underwear, drying your pubis well after a shower, eating active-culture yogurt, and cutting down on sweet drinks and foods should all help. If the smell does not clear up in a day or two after changing your regimen, or if you start to having itching or a white vaginal discharge, see your doctor.

      Good luck!

  14. QUESTION:
How To Get Rid Of Vaginal Odor?
I shower everyday and I wash down there with Summers Eves feminine cleanser. It stays odorless for a few hours but after a while is gets this musky scent? Not only do I want it to smell clean for myself but also for my boyfriend, so what other things can I do to make it stay cleaner longer? If this helps I don’t have anything wrong down there like yeast infections for anything like that.
Sorry Austin but I don’t think that is a good idea..I heard douching actually makes things worse..

  16. QUESTION:
Ladies… how do you get ride of odor down there?
I think I heard somene say drink lots of water but I do and I dont see a change. I dont douche I dont like those but I have the feminine wipes.. any ideas how to get rid of that odor?

    • ANSWER:
It is perfectly normal to have a vaginal odor. The odor is usually pretty inoffensive and is a natural part of being a woman. During puberty the vaginal area secretes more sweat and tends to be moister and therefore more aromatic (smelly). You may also notice that the odor changes as your period cycle changes, becoming more noticeable right around menstruation.

here are some things you can do to help with odor:

Always wear cotton panties. Cotton material allows fresh air inside and prevents bacteria from breeding rapidly.

If you have a sweat problem (downstairs lol) where a thin panty liner These thin panty pads absorb the smell and keep you fresh all day long. They are easy to wear and can be changed several times throughout the day.

Don’t use any of the sprays, or scented products, this can create infection.

  17. QUESTION:
    what causes the fishy smell?
I have this strong odour from my vagina. I wash it quite often, but after an hour, the smell comes again. I’ve tried using a few feminine wash but nothing seems to help. What causes it and how to get rid of the odour?

    • ANSWER:
I would visit an OBGYN and if you don’t have one, go to Planned Parenthood. I go there because as I am 16, my insurance doesn’t cover an OBGYN yet.
Like one of the girls said, if you are sexually active at all, especially unprotected, it could be your first signs of STD. On request or their own suspicion, an OBGYN will run the test, for PP, talk with the nurse about the odor and she will take it from there with telling you how to handle it and proper testing.
If it turns out not to be an STD or infection, it could be your bf’s cum if you’re fooling around unprotected. Just use a condom then. If you aren’t sexually active, then it could be your diet. If you tend to eat things with an odor (onions, garlic, less attractive fishes) it can affect the scent also. If that’s the case, just switch to things like more fruits and yogurts. It not only smells better but also improves taste ;)
If you’ve tried all these things and they’ve all returned negative results, then your up “chocolate creek without a popsicle stick” You’ll just have to deal!

      Hope I helped!

  18. QUESTION:
    no itch,no discharge….only odor????
i’m very clean girl. but after my period i’m having this realy bad smell from my vagina. well it never happend before. i don’t think i got some infection because i use feminine douche all the time. how can i get rid of the smell? and i don’t have time to go to Dr. so what kind of pill or gel do i need to buy?

    • ANSWER:
douching is actually no longer recommended as it washes out essential bacteria from the vagina called Lactobacilli. Women with multiple sexual partners who douche regularly are likely to suffer from a condition called bacterial vaginosis. This is characterised by a fishy odor and foul smelling discharge.

Odor during a period can also be because of not changing the sanitary napkin frequently, The wetness causes bacterial growth which in turn promotes odor. you can use a tampon instead.

Try using a local gentle soapfree preparation containing lactic acid about twice a day. If you can get Povidone Iodine tablets without a prescription, then insert them per vaginally. Use about twice a day.

Finally, if nothing helps, go and see your doctor

PS I personally think its an infection

  19. QUESTION:
Help!!! I’m feeling hopeless. What can I do about this awful odor!?!?
Okay so I have this awful vaginal odor and I’m at my wits end with trying to get rid of it. Any ideas??

It’s freaking pungent, but it isn’t really noticeable when I haven’t been sweating or active that day. It’s the worse when I’m working out and after/during basketball practice. Usually it’s a B.O. smell at first, like the smell you get when you’re not wearing deodorant, then once that subsides it turns into a sewer-y smell.

We can’t take showers after practice (1st period) so I use those feminine wipes, a clean change of underwear, and a lot of perfume, to try to get rid of the smell before I go to class. But the smell stays with me throughout my day no matter what I try.

I’ve become super self conscious it’s ridiculous. In a way I suppose I’m lucky b/c people don’t seem to really notice it’s me but whenever I hear “it smells like @ss” or “straight up ish” my stomach sinks b/c I know it’s me.

What can I do? I went to my doctor and she tested me to see if I have BV. She said my bacteria levels looked normal, but I have a high level of white blood cells so something must be up, so she gave me the antibiotics anyway and obviously they didn’t work. I’m so confused, I have good hygiene with daily showers and clean changes of underwear and I’m not sexually active. I’m 16, I already have enough to be self conscious about,

Does anyone know what’s wrong with me and how I can get rid of it?? I’m feeling quite hopeless. Thanks :)

How do I get rid of this awful smell. I had a Cryo done a week ago today. And I have been expeirencing bad odor. I work in a Dental Office as an Assistant and my vaginal area is right by the patients heads during procedures. I can smell it through my clothes and it is making me very self conscious. 21. QUESTION:
How do i get rid of this smell?
So i have odor..down there….and i dont know what to do about it, i use eve, you know, the feminine wash? and i also use baby wipes down there like twice a day, once in the morning and once when i get home from school. i dont know what to do! and im emmbarissed of what my boyfriend will think because we’re planning on having sex soon…and i know one of you will probably say, ” if he really likes you, he wont mind ” but i dont care if he doesnt mind, i do, alot. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME?!

    • ANSWER:
Everyone has a scent “down there.” We sweat, we have discharge, we have our own musk. It all contributes to our scent. Try using only plain water to wash. Most times, less really is more. :)
However, if it’s a very bad smell, you should go to the doctor to make sure you don’t have an infection.

  22. QUESTION:
Any tips on these few questions?
I have a couple questions pertaining to my body and I need solutions to help me with them. They are personal, but I can’t seem to find a good, solid “yes, this is a good (way) to fix it…”

First Question: How do I get rid of acne on my bottom? I take a shower either every day or every other day (depends on how hectic my schedule is). Is exfoliating the one and only answer? Or should I get a medicated cream, too? It’s a very embarassing attribute, especially when I want to be inimate with my partner- it limits my self esteem with certain positions. They’re painful at times, and make my backside look aweful. I want a pretty a** like any other girl would like to have! Lol.

Second Question: Is it normal to have really bad red bumps the next few days after shaving my pubic region? I liked to be shaved for my partner and it also reduces feminine odors, but I HATE the next two to three days after when I break out in a field of red itchy bumps and tons of little miniature white heads. I feel like I’m the only one not understanding how to get that under control. And my razors are brand new and I’ve rotated between liquid body soap and shaving cream. What do I do to prevent this break out? It’s HORRIBLE.

Third Question: I just had my first baby three months ago and I hate the way my skin is now. It’s hard to look in the mirror and be pleased with my image (then again, I remind myself I wouldn’t have my daughter if I hadn’t sacrificed that part of me). But it shouldn’t BE a sacrifice! My tummy skin sags and has gross stretch marks all over it and my breasts are more saggy now than ever. I want a tight, toned, and healthy body. Any suggestions? I’m not down for extreme dieting, but exercise I can do and eating fruits and vegetables are cool. Are there any SPECIFIC routines or exercises that I can do around the house or outside- besides walking/jogging. That’s a givin’.

Please help! I’m only 21 and I want to fix these issues :)

    • ANSWER:
To the first question, exfoliating with a loofah will help but try a medicated body wash like neutrogena body clear body wash, that always works for me when I broke out on my body. If something like that doesn’t work you may want to see a doctor about getting something stronger.
Second question, shave bumps are completely normal if your shaving without something down there to soften the hair beforehand. Try putting some conditioner on the area your going to shave a minute or so before you shave to soften the hair and then shave. If you dont want to use conditioner you can buy this stuff called coochy cream, you can get it from amazon.com or from any adult store or a drugstore may even sell it, Im not sure. BTW, shaving does not prevent smelling, the hair is actually there to prevent bacteria from getting into that area and creating odor.
Question three, I would try rubbing vitamin e oil on your stretch marks in the shower and then when you get out use Palmers cocoa butter lotion for stretch marks. I dont know what to do about the loose skin. I would think circuit training, like lifting weights to strengthen certain muscles. Stay hydrated. Exfoliate. Take a multivitamin every day. And I would think pilates would really help too. I got this info from… http://www.ehow.com/how_5042771_rid-loose-skin-after-dieting.html

      I hope this helps.

  23. QUESTION:
Personal Problem that I need some advice about?
Okay- i know every female gets this once in a while so I’m not embarrassed. But, i have a very big problem with vaginal odor. I know, gross but I’m gonna be honest, i need advice about how to get rid of it. I’ve tried EVERYTHING. I’ve tried using different soaps, using no soap at all and just hot water, I’ve even tried using wash especially for “feminine areas”. I get a lot of discharge, too. So could someone give me a little advice on how to make this embarrassing odor go away before my boyfriend and I’s 5 year anniversary? Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
If you have a odor than you probably have a bacterial infection which should get treated with anti biotic. I don’t suggest using any scented soaps which will not help your problem, just irritate it. There are over the counter test that you can purchase at a Walgreen Rite Aid, etc. to detect what you have but for the meantime you could buy vaginal wipes that you could use to temporary stop the odor but you really should see a gynecologist
