Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
    Vaginal Discharge – Smells?
I’ve been on birth control for 2 years no problemo. I take it every day to STOP periods entirely and I let the periods flush out once a year (7 day period). I have always had, even before taking control pills this foul smelling odor from vaginal discharge. It smells like a musty gassy exhaust. I’ve been to a gynecologist and she said there is no bacterial inflation or infection of any sort. I have never had sex either. The mucus is so excessive that it soaks 1 normal size pad in under an hour and the smell gets quite annoying. I use anti-bacterial soap around the pubic hair but I never wash with soap inside the vagina. I use plain water and take baths/showers every day.

I do not have any clue as to what this is, nor do any of the doctors i’ve been to. I have seen over 5 specialized doctors and gotten 15 kinds of swab examinations non have returned back with any kind of infection or disruption.

Any ideas as to what’s causing this?
    My diet consists of :
    40% Fruits/Veggies (Mostly fruits)
    15-20% Meats
    30% Dairy Products
    10% Wheats / Breads

    • ANSWER:
This is likely not an infection but I dunno

  2. QUESTION:
Why do vaginal discharges smell so foul just after periods but get better later?
Right after my monthly period i sometimes get a discharge that’s like curdled milk which smells so nasty. it clears up after about a week though. What could be the cause? It isn’t consistent throughout the month – just for the week after my period. I use pantyliners then but i’d like to get rid of it altogether! Can anyone help out here?

    • ANSWER:
It sounds to me that you might have some sort of infection or yeast imbalance. Your discharge should never smell foul – it is not normal. I would see a doctor if i were you, just to be on the safe side.

  3. QUESTION:
foul sour smelling vaginal odor during intercourse around time of ovulation?
They say that during the time of ovulation, a sweet smell should arise. Not for me! For me it is exactly the opposite. I noticed this just recently, so maybe it has been going on for sometime, or just began, I don’t know. The odor is like a sour smell, almost that of sulfer, and it ONLY arizes during intercourse. There is no discharge, and the smell goes away after I shower. The last couple of times I have noticed it, it has been around the time of ovulation.
Has anyone had similar occurances? Or possibly know what it might be caused from?

  4. QUESTION:
    Abnormal pap smear with symptoms….?
My sisters pap smear came back abnormal. She had a complicated abortion last year. Since the abortion, she bleeds after intercourse and she says it’s painful to have intercourse. She gets really bad pains in her lower stomach area that causes her to sweat. She also has a foul smelling vaginal discharge. She is scheduled to have further testings, but I am wondering if these are obvious symptoms of cervical cancer? I think she told me that either her cervix have changed in color or her cervix cells. She said something about the color green, I am assuming is her cells. Has anyone had similar symptoms?

    • ANSWER:
Probably is an infection. Maybe more details would help us answer your question. For instance what means abnormal pap? II? III? LSIL? ASCUS?
And the cell are not green, maybe the discharge is green, and that means a infection, maybe Trichomonas.

  5. QUESTION:

  6. QUESTION:
    Vaginal Discharge Problems-Serious Answers Only?
*First and foremost, I am in my 20′s, not sexually active, do not take birth control. I am quite active (bike), eat lots of fruit and carbs, am about 113 lbs but am only 5’1 so it works out. Apparently, I have an elevated white blood cell count in my vaginal-area as well, according to my doctor.

Since high school, I have had a variety of vaginal discharge “problems”. Some of them may be natural, but I don’t know because it changes so often.

My most frequent “symptom” is a foul smelling, pasty white coating (yes, literal coating) to my vaginal wall. At times, it can accumulate and discharge in large amounts. It feels like I am constantly getting my period because it comes out so often. I have resorted to wearing pads almost everyday to keep it from leaking through my pants. Also note that the discharge becomes hard after a while, and can sometimes crystallize to the opening of my vagina, causing my pubic hairs to literally harden with the stuff. It smells terrible and is embarrassing. At other times the discharge will be murky or clear and really stringy (think snot) and jello-like, which I hear is semi-normal depending on your ovulation. Recently, my discharge has become clumpy like moldy yogurt and is usually white or a variation of greeny-yellow. Does anybody have the same issues? Could I have a yeast infection?

This is really embarressing for me, so serious answers would be appreciated!

    • ANSWER:
That’s definitely a yeast infection. Do not leave it untreated, it can cause infection and other complications further down the road. Over the counter medications may help ease the symptoms for now but you should go see your OB-GYN as soon as possible. If you’ve let this go on as long as it sounds like you have, your doctor may need to put you on antibiotics as well.

  7. QUESTION:
What’s causing my sudden weird vaginal discharge?
I’m 24 years old and haven’t been sexually active for almost a year now. For the past few days I’ve been experiencing discharge from my vagina. Two days ago the discharge was like thick white lumps along with normal white milky discharge. I had a burning sensation when I urinated and it was very sensitive to touch when I wiped. Today my vagina didn’t hurt as bad but now I’m having skin tissue like discharge that’s a very light pink. None of the discharge has a foul smell. I should be starting my period anytime now but it almost feels like I’m already on it even though there’s no blood. I haven’t changed my normal eating habits but early last week my dermatologist put me on 500mg/day of Metformin to clear up my acne (she said it was a hormonal type thing causing my acne). Could the Metformin be causing this discharge and discomfort? I’ve never had any problems like this before and my periods have always been normal. Only serious answers please! I’m worried this is something serious. I can’t get to the doc until after the New Year. Is there anything I can get over the counter to help and what’s happening with me?? Thanks!
Thanks for those who responded so fast! To add some more detail: My dermatologist also has me on Spironolactin also for the treatment of acne. She told me that the Spironolactin has slowed down my acne but it didn’t fully get rid of it so she put me on Metformin too. I haven’t been taking any antibiotics. What causes a yeast infection? I’m not familiar with them so I’ll try and search the web for more info.

    • ANSWER:
I’ve been taking Metformin for 8 years or so and I’ve never had a problem with odd discharge. However, Metformin is always used to make your body use insulin better which alters your hormones which can cause an altered discharge. Does your derm suspect something other than just acne and have you been on antibiotics lately?

But, I really think that you are on the start of a yeast infection. Especially if you have been on antibiotics. (I’m not doctor but I have a vagina..lol.) There is a kit at the drug store that lets you test whether or not it is a yeast infection or something bacterial. It’s fairly inexpensive and works well. For now though try eating yogurt (I’ve actually put unsweetened yogurt on the area.) or taking pills with active cultures in it to battle the yeast and try an over the counter yeast infection cream.

I hope you feel better soon!

  8. QUESTION:
    Yellow vaginal discharge?
I have been experiencing slightly yellow vaginal discharge. It is not always there but when it is it is typically stringy and thin. Once it was thicker and was mixed with white discharge. I have also been having lower adbdominal pain that is mostly on the right side but radiates across the entire abdomen sometimes.

Yesterday I went to the doctor. Had a urine test and pelvic exam. No UTI and the doctor said my exam looked normal but that she would sent the culture for testing of gonorrhea and chlamydia, even though I was tested 2 months ago and it was negative. The doctor thinks I have an ovarian cyst based on my abdominal pain and thinks the discharge is normal. When I got tested 2 months ago I was also having yellow discharge at the time too.

I am having no other symptoms. No foul smell, no itching, burning, pain in vaginal region, bleeding during intercourse.
My question is, does anyone else have this problem or know what may be causing the discharge?

    • ANSWER:
YOU HAVETWO PROBLEMS 1.DISCHARGE 2.PAIN LOWER ABDOMEN
      1. DISCHARGE-IF YOU WERE TESTED FOR THIS AND NO PROBLEMS WERE DETECTED AND IF THIS DISCHARGE IS MINIMAL,NOT WETTING YOUR CLOTHES AND NOT FORCING YOU TO CHANGE, THEN NOTHING TO WORRY.
2.PAIN LOWER ABDOMEN-THIS COULD BE BECAUSE OF VARIOUS REASONS, AN ULTRASOUND OF PELVIS WILL BE HELPFUL IN DECIDING IF THERE IS OVARIAN CYST OR NOT.
ONCE ULTRASONOGRAPHY REPORT IS AVAILABLE THAN MATTER CAN BE FURTHER CLARIFIED.

  9. QUESTION:
Sex and foul vaginal smell? Yay or nay?
I’ve just had a miscarriage and finished bleeding in the past couple of days. Discharge is now normal looking and no other symptoms but I still have a faint foul odour. I was trying to look up what might cause it or what I might do to fix it and my boyfriend asked what I was doing as I was trying to smell it. I told him “it doesn’t smell like fish or urine… I don’t know? Old blood? Death?” Now he wants to leave and not have sex at all. He’s looking for the opinion of the Y!A community if he’s right or not.

    • ANSWER:

  10. QUESTION:
    Causes of a vaginal itch?
Ok I have had sex with 2 guys in the past 2 weeks. The first one is someone I have had sex with hundreds of times and I know hes clean. But we used a warming gel that I’ve never used before and I kinda got a red rash after we were done but I didnt know if it was from the intensity or not. The other guy I accidentally hooked up with while I was drunk but long story short he and I started dating and have had sex a couple times since then. Ive developed a really bad itch since the warming gel incident and Im not quite sure what it is. I dont have any foul smell or discharge except for clear watery stuff that doesnt smell like anything. For a little while my area was kinda swollen but there was no high temperature or bumps or even a rash anymore. I plan to go get checked out here soon but I thought I would ask this and see if maybe its nothing (honestly i’ve never had this much sex so close together and the guy im dating now likes to use his hands and mouth a lot too)

  12. QUESTION:
Vaginal Mucus causing scabs on him?
I’ve always had issues with excessive vaginal discharge, I constantly get yeast infections as of late, but now when i don’t have them, and I have intercourse with my bf, his penis dries out a little, I went to my gyno asking about it, she says it’s because of my yeast infection, we cured the infection and the dryness on his penis went away.

I kept having symptoms of constant clear to white lotiony discharge, no irritation or foul smell. I’ve had THIS issue for a few years,..Dr. says it’s a bacterial infection (which she gave me meds for) and we thought we got rid of, but then i had symptoms of strong, dark stale smelling urine…but only in the morning, we tried the same meds as a creme instead of pills like the first time and it seemed like we were on the right track,..but still no cure of it completely.

I went down to do a unrine analysis and waiting for the results..but I’m concerned because in the meantime I’m still having intercourse with my bf and now he’s devolping scabs afterward.

there’s one in particular near the head (just on one side) that keeps opening back up after sex. he says it doesn’t hurt,..just tender for a day, the scab overs the opening and he’s fine.

I’m worried though because it seems like things are getting worse for him, even though it’s just the same thing that’s always happened to me. He thinks may need to get checked out,..i don’t think so though, because it only happens when he’s with me.

Any ideas on what can be done or causes?

After that, I came on my period for the whole time but my periods stared smelling like the discharge. I had my period up until like 2 months after I stopped getting injections. My period stopped for about 3 weeks and then like soon after I had interourse, it came back. 14. QUESTION:
are there any vaginal infections OTHER than herpes that could cause sore that is accompanied by a discharge?
So PPH has made a lot of money off of me.. and yet I still have the same problems. I know when there is a change in my discharge and for about a year now I have had increased discharge, to where everytime I use the restroom I have discharge outside of my vagina, or my panties are continuously damp. When I wipe the discharge seems to string out of my body. Its quite embarrassing.. it doesnt seem to have a foul or fishy smell but I would say it is definitely musty or something of that nature… normally my discharge smells not like anything. The other issue is a sore that appeared, just one and it doesnt completely look like herpes… as it seems to be set a layer into the skin rather than on top. PPH just keeps telling me its normal even though I tell them its not, and they seem to prescribe me diflucan or whatever it is for a yeast infection. They say when they look at my discharge they dont see BV but I have a high number of white blood cells meaning I am fighting something.. so here have this for yeast. They also ran a culture on the bump as this is the second time it has appeared in the same spot and said it was an adequate sample and it was negative for HSV. So I am trying to find out, are there any vaginal infections (BV, trich, yeast ECT, or other STDS like gonorrhea, chlamydia ) that could cause an increase in discharge, that is yellowish to at times yellowish green in color and may produce a sore?
I would like to add that I would love to get a second opinion, however I am one of the many americans without health insurance who has also lost their job, to boot I am a single mom. I dont have the ability to go rack of expensive doctors bills as most require payment at the time of service and PPH’s 75-100 visit is breaking my bank and making it to where I have to choose to not to eat so I can feed my son still
so far no one will work out a payment plan. And surprisingly enough, my local health departments do not offer a blood test. I would like to also add that I do not have increased just before and during the sore that appeared, it is always. I heard from most people who say they have herpes that yellowish to yellowish green discharge is very rare with herpes. I dunno, I just know that the discharge is there regardless. The single sore has appeared once a year since mid 2008 (last sexual activity was nov 2007) and typically after shaving

  15. QUESTION:
    Foul vaginal odor sometimes?
I have had yearly pap smears since I was 18, I’m 22 now. All of em were normal results. I have always had a bad smell from down there at certain times of the month. (I am on birth control pills).
I have no itching, odd discharge, or anything. I have mentioned a slight yellow discharge and the smell to my doc. and he said its normal and the pap came out normal. He said sometime b/c pills can cause the discharge, so that is normal.

It seems when I wear a panty liner, I dont notice any smell. When I do not use a panty liner, the smell is there, to me anyway, its bad…when spread my legs like when i’m sitting, it just smells discusting. Again, with a panty liner no smell.

How do i get rid of the smell. I know I sweat real bad down there, I am a bit overweight. It is very embarassing and I woud like real suggestions from other women who have this problem.
I do try and shave often. Sometimes there still is a bit of hair there.
I wash everyday. I have noticed that I dont smell it as much or at all when i wear cotten panties.

    • ANSWER:
just clean every day, and i know wearing a panty liner sucks but it’s much better than smelling, oh and there some powders you can use that help too, you will just have to shop around for the one that is the best for you, (vagasil fem powders and stuff like that)……..shhhh i have the same problem

  16. QUESTION:
many yeast infection questions, vaginal discharge questions, help really needed im only 17 recurring infection?
the following is TMI (too much info aka kind of nasty) so if you dont really wanna help and you have a weak stomach/will be grossed out just stop reading now!

Im a 17 year old girl and yes im sexually active with a long term bf.
Okay so for a while I have had white, thick discharge that leaves stains in my underwear(feeling wet alot) and white clumps.. im not sure if its exactly “cottage cheese like” but it has little clumps almost like wet toilet paper and its very WHITE it is not “clear” sometimes it dries yellow(and crusty..ew) but its mostly white white white. it does not itch at all. it is sometimes really TIGHT during intercourse, almost like its really dry and irritated down there, and a little over a month ago i even bled a little bit affter intercourse but just a tiny spot. sex can be painful at times but never overly painful. it looks red and irritated sometimes but other times its perfectly normal. ive had this probably 3-4 months. ive always had heavy discharge so i thought it was normal and i ignored it but its gotten worse the past 2 months. i thought it was part of my cycle because it always happens about a week after my period is gone and then lasts up until right before my period . IS IT POSSIBLE FOR YEAST INFECTIONS TO DO THIS? <-- that is my main question. be present, period, then gradually gain its presence back, period, reapeat the cycle, etc?! anyways it doesnt smell like fish at all, but it doesnt smell good either. it is really strong smelling. i could not call it "foul" but i wouldnt calll it pleasant either and my underwear smells bad and its really embarassing. and sometimes the smell is so strong i can smell myself through my leggings. (highly embarassing) since its getting worse, i dont want to ignore it anymore. my boyfriend cant even go down on me anymore, and heck, i wouldnt let him even if he wanted to...... too embarassing. he said i taste "bitter" which is awful cause it used to be sweet. Does this sound like a yeast infection? i never thought it was cause it hasnt been "painful, itchy" at all. Also, sometimes it feels like a mild UTI occasionally, not all the time, but i know its not a uti. i think its part of the infection maybe?

does this sound normal or like an infection? anyone else ever had this? when i stick my finger up there to check around the situation, it comes out with the white lotiony discharge but also with small clumps and the "wet paper towel bits" on it and its a extremely white piece of paper color with a lot of discharge. on my vagina lips theres always like little bits of white.. i dont know if this is normal. its probably not :( so embarassing.

anyways heres my situation now: my last dr oppointment i told them about this(i see a pediatric doctor) and they said they couldnt do anything without a sample and i was on my period so i couldnt give them one.... now if i called to make an appointment today and i dont know if ill get there in time while its still active. i also should add you know that stringy clear discharge you get during ovulation? i used to have that and i know its healthy and i dont even have that anymore just the constant white stuff... very worrying. anyways should i try and make an appointment or should i go to CVS and buy one of those home yeast infection testing kits? if i test positive, should i buy monistat or wait and see a dr? im worried cause ive waited so long thinking it was normal since i had no severe discomfort....

also what causes these infections? is there a special diet i should be on? no sugar or something? im very worried about this leading to fungal infections in my organs! i heard thats rare but is it really dangerous to leave a yeast infection untreated? please help me im thinking of all worst case scenarios.
and anyone else ever have a yeast infection that came every period until you realized it was something wrong

    • ANSWER:
I didn’t read it all, I stopped at “could it be a yeast infection?” If you have any burning, thick discharge, itching, odd odor, irritation, etc, you need to see your doctor or specialist.

YES. Everything you have means you have an infection, it may or may not be yeast, but I’m thinking it is. And because you kept having sex/let your boyfriend go down on you, he needs to be treated too. They get yeast infections from infected partners. It can grow in your mouth, and on genitalia.

It’ll only get worse if you don’t get it treated. It doesn’t have any effects on your organs, but you will continue to infect your boyfriend. You need to lay off the bread and sugar, drink a lot of water and go to the doctors, get a diflucan to fix it. First of all, -do not- have any playtime until everything is totally cleared up. This includes fingering, oral, and intercourse, it’ll only make it worse.

As soon as you start getting any uncommon symptoms, see your doctor or it will continue getting worse. Some other tips are to make sure you wear really loose, cotton underwear and if you get sweaty, switch them out as sweat can make them worse. This is coming from somebody who has been battling infections for 3 months straight (mine were from taking antibiotics). Not getting it fixed fast will and can mess with your bacteria down there, ultimately resulting in recurring yeast infections, possible bacterial vaginosis or worse.

When you go, take your boyfriend with you because he needs to be tested too, in his mouth and penis. Good luck. Watch out for signs if this happens again.

PS: You both should also be tested for STD’s. Just in case, to throw those off the list.

  17. QUESTION:
Please help !!! Doctor told me today found E Coli in Vagina!!?? what is this????
    Please help

I have been having terrible symptoms of having a runny (sorry i know it’s gross) and foul smelling vaginal symptoms. I had a swab done and the DR’s office said the doctor went home for the day and said my test came back abnormal– E Coli in my vaginal swab and I need meds!

What is this; and is this what is causing my foul odor and discharge? And also what other symptoms come with it..is it cancerous??

    thank you so much
whew..i feel much better now. Thanks gals !!

    • ANSWER:
E.coli is a bacteria found in your gastrointestinal tract. It is foul smelling because it is growing inside your vagina but antibiotic should clear it up. it is not cancerous. just be very cautious that you always wipe from front to back and if you are sexually active, do not begin sex in the rectum and then allow him to enter your vagina. E.Coli can get into your vagina and your urinary tract if you do not follow proper hygiene. don’t be ashamed or embarassed… it hapens to many women.

  18. QUESTION:
Can you get Cervicitis from BV?
I went to the Doctors office the other day because I noticed I had some odor, vaginal Discharge and a Bump on my cervix. I googled those symptoms and I found Nabothian cysts and BV. I told the doctor that I found a bump on my cervix and he actually giggled at me and asked what I was doing in there and said I did not know where my cervix was. After the exam he said that I may have BV and Cervicitis. I asked him if they were both STD’s and he shook his head and said he’s going to give me a cream for me to put inside myself and for me to take pills (antibiotics). When I got home I went back on google and looked up what cervicitis was and I keep getting gonherrea and clymadia. But I also read that it is caused by an imbalance in bacteria in your vagina. When I googled BV I found the samething. So I wanted to know if you can get cervicitis from BV or the other way around. I have been with the same person for 4 years. I was told about 4.5 years ago to stop using tampons becuase I kept getting infections (UTIS) from them. But I used them for a few periods this month. I douched too. I started noticing that my discharge was smelling differently in Feburary. In Feburary I started to take Ecstasy. After one weekend I started to take it every weekend or even during the week. But I slowed down and did it every weekend, every other weekend, once a month, and then every few months. When I did not take it for a while I noticed that my discharge was going back to normal. The night before Halloween I took Ecstasy and for the rest of the week my discharge was foul smelling. Then it stopped. I did not tell the doctor any of this. I also had sex the night before I went for my exam. Could these be factors too? I told my boyfriend that I have BV but can he get it too? What about the cervicitis they say males can not get it but if its supposed to be linked to gonherrea and clymadia then can’t he get it? Please HELP!!!!!!
    please answer in english

    • ANSWER:
Cervicitits just means your cervix is inflamed. (Men cannot get it because they don’t have a cervix.) Cervicitis is not really a condition by itself, but it’s caused by many other things like STDs, a yeast infection, recently having rough sex, a prolapsed uterus, and yes, it definitely can be caused by BV.

The cause of cervicitis should be investigated to make sure it’s not something serious. Normally I’d recommend getting an STD check so that can be treated if it’s there. Also a pap smear to check for cervical cells changes. But since you already know you have BV, it’s most likely from that. Give the BV meds a chance to work, and then go back to your doctor to make sure the problem has resolved.

BV is an overgrowth of certain bacteria in your vagina. The bacteria are always there, you just have too many of them right now. By having sex, you can pass on this bacteria to your boyfriend. They won’t hurt him, but then if you have sex with him again, he could pass the bacteria back to you. He’s not really reinfecting you because you always will have this bacteria in you (you need it), but he can upset the natural balance of bacteria in your vagina. It’s best to use condoms until the BV is gone.

Also, tampons aren’t usually associated with BV, but douching is. Stop douching. You do not need to douche. A healthy vagina is self cleaning.

I’m not sure how Ecstasy affects BV, but it is one of the worst drugs to take because it permantently destroys the pleasure receptors in your brain. Please stop taking it.

Lastly, I do not know why your doctor giggled about you finding a lump on your cervix. I feel mine all the time. Mostly because I use the NuvaRing, but feeling your cervix to help determine when your ovulating or if something is wrong up there (like weird bumps) is totally fine! You should do it with clean hands, but there’s nothing wrong with it.

      Good luck!

  20. QUESTION:
I have a question about vaginal infections yeast and BV?
Heres the history. I went to to urgent care at 15 weeks due to a horrible vaginal irritation. I assume it was a yeast infection due to the white discharge, fishy smell, burning and itching. So the on call practionioner did not want to do a vaginal exam because she said I was too early in pregnancy. She had me swipe the inside of my vagina and she looked at the discharge under a microscope. She said that she did not find yeast, trich, or BV. He said it was just an irritation and told me to use vagisil and dove scentless soap. My irritation continued to torture me. Two weeks later I had my doctors appointment and my doc did a vaginal exam and she put the swab under a microscope and she said that I did have a mid case of BV and she prescribe me metronidozole(something like that), which is an antibotic. It was a 7 day treatment and I got relief on the 3rd day but the symptoms came back and worst. So now I am depress because I am so miserable. So yesterday at my 21 weeks check up I told my doc I am still itching burning and all, so they check my urine and found 2+ leukyocytes(something like that) so she said it was a UTI but when she did my vaginal exam she said just by the look of it, she new it was a raging yeast infection but she was too lazy to put it under the microscope. I ask about the uti they found and she said it was just due to the discharge from the yeast infection. She prescribe we 2 med. Diflucan and some yeast infection creme. The diflucan is a 2day treatment and I began the creme after I finish the diflucan if my symptoms persist. Ok so heres the question Did the antibiotics cause the yeast infection? I took my first diflucan pill yesterday and a couple hours later I notice a bunch of vaginal mucus dicharge yellowish with chunks in it, coming out of my vagina. I been having this discharge all of along but it never alot like this. Does this mean the pill is working and thats just chunks of bacteria coming from my vagina or do i still have bv. I know some people say the bacteria just dissolves and you cant see it come out. I am not experiencing any itching or burning and the foul smell is just yeasty now as of yesterday.
I was looking for more answers, if you dont have one then move along and talk your shitt elsewhere.
BTW I ask this question this morning biotch.
    Thank you so much Tink.

  21. QUESTION:
Do you know that 90% of indian women are not aware of cervical cancer?
Cervical cancer has 4 stages, but if it gets noticed in initial stages the patient can be saved[or treated].
Symptoms:Abnormal bleeding.Women with cervical cancer may experience abnormal vaginal bleeding. This can be heavy or light bleeding during the month.

Unusual heavy discharge. An increased vaginal discharge is also a symptom of cervical cancer. It may be foul smelling, watery, thick, or contain mucus. It varies from woman to woman. It is important to report any unusual vaginal discharge to your doctor.

Pelvic pain. Pelvic pain that is not related to the normal menstrual cycle can be a cervical cancer symptom. Many women describe them ranging from a dull ache to sharp pains that can last hours. It can be mild or severe.

Pain during urination. Bladder pain or pain during urination can be a symptom of advanced cervical cancer. This cervical cancer symptom usually occurs when cancer has spread to the bladder.

Bleeding between regular menstrual periods, after sexual intercourse, douching, or pelvic exam. Bleeding after sexual intercourse, douching, or pelvic exam can be cervical cancer symptoms. This is due to the irritation of the cervix during these activities. While a healthy cervix may have a very small amount of bleeding, many conditions may cause bleeding after activities like sex.

Please keep in mind that these cervical cancer symptoms are also symptoms of many other illnesses. If you are experiencing these cervical cancer symptoms, please see a doctor. He or she will most likely do a pelvic exam and may order further tests

  22. QUESTION:
How could I have gotten tighter?
Okay – first let me list the many horrible symptoms I’ve been dealing with.

    - Depression
    – Hair loss
    – Ingrown hairs on legs and upper arms
    – Lack of appetite (And weight loss)
    – Very often tired and lightheaded
    - Little sleep
    – Sometimes a feeling of cut off circulation in a leg or arm
    – Migraines
    – Stomach pain
    – Extreme cramping on left side of uterus
    – Black stool with sometimes mucus (Yuck!)
    – Irritated around anus (Along with what seems to be a small hemorrhoid?)
    – Foul smelling yellowish green discharge (2 days ago, before period)
    – Brown discharge (On period, it’s usually bright red)
    – ^ Also smells more foul then usual
    – What seems to be a pimple under vaginal opening
    – Painless spots around vulva (Fordyce’s Spots?)
    – Lesions in mouth (iron deficiency?)

When I went to put a tampon in, I noticed it was difficult and A LOT tighter then usual.. What could cause this? I’m already suspecting I have a sort of STD.. I know SOMETHING is VERY wrong.. This is the first I’ve ever had a sort of outbreak (Like the pimple like bump around vulva and the rear end problems). I have an annual doctors appointment sometime soon, either this month or next.. I’m going to ask for a full examination..
But what can cause the tightness? It’s really worrying me..

By the way, I am 17. I’ll be 18 in three months.

    • ANSWER:
No they can’t..you have to go and see your doctor for a prescription (a cream for instance)
      OR
      Treatment of Vaginal Infections
The treatment for vaginal infections depends on the cause.

Bacterial vaginosis is often treated with a prescription medication called metronidazole (Flagyl, Protostat). This medication is taken by mouth. Sometimes it causes an upset stomach or nausea. If you drink alcohol while taking this drug, you may have nausea and vomiting. There are other medicines that may be taken by mouth for this infection, such as clindamycin (Cleocin), and there are also vaginal creams and gels.

A yeast infection is usually treated with creams and suppositories that are placed in the vagina. The length of treatment may vary from one to seven days. Some of these medicines are now available without prescription, such as miconazole (Monistat) and clotrimazole (Gyne-Lotrimin or Mycelex-G), and you may use then when you know you have a yeast infection. If the infection does not get better or comes back soon, you should see your doctor to make sure of the diagnosis and treatment.

Trichomonas vaginitis is also treated with metronidazole, taken by mouth. However, because this infection is often passed back and forth between sexual partners, it is necessary that the partner also take the medication to prevent it coming back.

      What treatment do you recommend?

      Which drugs will you use?

  29. QUESTION:
Thick discharge like vaseline, yeast infection? pregnancy?
    Problem:
I’ve been having this irregular thick discharge down there that is different than my normal. It is white with a slight tint of yellow, it is very very thick but not like cottage cheese, more like vaseline but more opaque. There is no foul odor, no fishy smell, and I don’t feel itchy down there or feel burning when I urinate. Overall I feel pretty normal down there except for the discharge.
I used the Vagisil screening kit and it says I have a normal vaginal pH.

    Question:
    1. Do you think it’s yeast infection? I don’t have health insurance so I can’t go to an ob/gyn. Should I just go ahead and try to clear it up with Monistat?

    2. I read somewhere on the net that when a woman is pregnant, she gets some thick white discharge too, is that true? I had unprotected sex with my husband about 2 weeks ago (using the pull-out method), my period is supposed to start in a few days from now, do you think the thick discharge that I’m having is caused by pregnancy?

    Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
I had a yeast infection and didn’t know. my Dr told me I had it during a pap. I had no itching and no burning so ys it could still be an infection.

Also yes pregnancy can cause a discharge like that too. You could take a test using first response since it is the most sensitive and you could take it tomorrow morning with your first morning pee.

  30. QUESTION:
    Question about vaginal fluid?
Me and my boyfriend of 2 years have had sex for quite a while, ALWAYS with a condom. were both 16. he can drive, but i cant. My mom doesnt know weve been having sex or anything, were not close at all. But i need to see like a health doctor or a doctor for teens because about 2 months ago we noticed that my vagina discharge and fluid smelt weird, like sour and foul. and its been that way ever since. i really want to get it checked out because i know somethings wrong and i might have an infection but i dont want my mom to know that i went to the doctor and got pills and stuff for it. So would there be anyway i can go see like a health doctor without paying much to nothing? cause ive heard there is special places for teens with that stuff.

    • ANSWER:
If you have always used condoms then I seriously doubt it is an STD. You most likely have a yeast infection such as thrush which is very common in women and is not an STD.

A lot of women get it after a course of antibiotics as the bacteria balance in the vagina is compromised when they are taken.

You have no need to worry about going to your doctor about this and the doctor cannot tell your mother anything as you are 16. Alternatively, have a look on the internet for local GUM or sexual health clinics who will check for STDs and infections such as thrush. It is advisable that both you and your boyfriend get checked out regularly, even if you are safe and only sleep with each other.

  31. QUESTION:
What could be causing this genital rash? I need answers !!!?
I have unprotected sex i do not sleep around i only have one sex partner. I have this chapping on the outside of my vagina and I get this rash on the inside by my left vagina lip,it sometimes itches and it seems to come and go, like its usually there for a couple days then it goes away for awhile..All std tests are negative i get tested every two weeks. My new gyno that i went to looked down there and she said it doesnt look like anything sexual transmitted down there or herpes. She said its just how im made down there. But she did a test for genital diseases and they were negative. She did a hsv blood test and it shows i have HSV1 in my blood. O yeah my old gyno said i have genital herpes even though the test didnt show it. But i really dont think its herpes because i always thought herpes were painful blisters thats mostly on the outside. But i need answers does anyone know what can be causing the rash?
I do get recurrent vaginal infections like yeast alot and bacteria vaginosis for the 2nd time. And i changed soaps recently to unscented. But i do wear pantiliners everyday because of the smelly discharge that smells like foul cheese
also u cant see the rash but u can only feel it,, i just look really red down there

    • ANSWER:
The test shows you have HSV-1 (oral herpes/cold sores). BUT what the test didn’t tell you is WHERE you have HSV-1! Assuming you’ve had oral sex, there is a very strong possibility that you have HSV-1 transmitted to the genitals via oral sex–which is probably what the “old” gyn was seeing.

There are two types of herpes:
HSV-1 (oral herpes/cold sores) which usually affects the lips but is very easily transmitted to the genitals.
HSV-2 (genital herpes) prefers the genital region and rarely transmits to the mouth, but it is possible.

IF you took a viral swab of the sores, unless it was done within 24-48 hours of the sores appearing, the test was worthless. The next test you can take is the IgG type-specific herpes test, which differentiates between the types of virus. But here is the catch–it can take anywhere from 2 weeks-4 months for the antibodies of the virus to show up in your blood–and a test taken at 3 months after your possible exposure is the only one that can be trusted. IF you have had exposure to the virus, it is possible HSV-2 antibodies have not yet had the time to appear in your blood.

But I’m betting you have HSV-1 of the genitals. Herpes does NOT always appear as blisters. It can appear as a rash, a bunch of tiny bumps, a “paper cut” or slit in the skin, which is why doctors miss diagnosing it by sight 90% of the time, because they’re looking for blisters and ulcers. Vaginal discharge can be part of the scenario as well, and the outbreak often occurs on the vagina, cervix.

May want to check out the source below for more information. Time to get educated.

  33. QUESTION:
    How to stop foul odor?
I’ve had white lotiony discharge for about 2 years now.

It increased for a while and, and then decreased.

Currently, it is sometimes white (and gets yellow by the end of the day sometimes), and most of the time it is clear and watery. I’m worried, because now the odor has gotten worse. I can just be sitting down, and smell it.
I’ve been to the doctors a lot, they said it was normal. I was recently tested for diseases, and have none.

The odor just started maybe a week or 2 ago. I haven’t been sexually active for a while, so it can’t be that.

I do masturbate, so could that be a cause?

Is the foul odor a bad sign? Is there any way that I can stop the odor?

And is it not safe to have oral sex because of my discharge (assuming the odor will stop)?

I use vaginal spray (i think it’s called fds). Could that be a factor?

    • ANSWER:
Masturbating is not a cause, but the vaginal spray might be. A lot of women are irritated by vaginal sprays and the only signs are the odor. Since you have tested negative for everything, I would suggest you either douche and see what happens (don’t do this often), or get a yeast infection kit and see what happens. It could also just be your natural odor. Not long ago, I had a really foul odor and I used a yeast infection treatment kit and I’m back to normal. You say you’ve had this problem about 2 years so it’s possible that’s just your natural scent.

  34. QUESTION:
Is my vagina ‘over cleaning’ itself?
If vaginal discharge is due to the vagina cleaning it’s self. Then does means if I get it daily, wouldn’t my vagina be self cleaning it self a bit too much.

It’s very complicated getting it daily.I’m aware of the smell and color, and it smells normal since it’s just white and the smell isn’t as foul.
I’m also aware that females get it differently some get more than others and on certain days, but how come am I getting it every since day?

it can’t be anything regarding sex cause I’m a virgin and 17years old,so i’ve been having this for like 3 years now would it lessen maybe around my twenties?

    • ANSWER:
Well, if you have problems with it going all over your undies then use a thin pad to help.

I think its normal to have it cleaning itself. I dont think theres such thing as over cleaning. At this age, there’s infections and all these issues down there. Maybe its just keeping it self nice and clean.

  35. QUESTION:
Probably my last question on Women’s Health YA for some time; Everyone & anyone please answer?
Background: 19, a virgin, my mum had a hysterotomy due to cyst on her ovary, no visit to an gyno, ever.

I have been experiencing quite a lot of discomfort for some time now. After masturbation I get cramps and period pains, I feel sick/like vomitting, and a bit fatigued, it lasts varies from 1-2 hours to a day or so. & experience leg cramps.
I also felt some lumps inside my vagina a few weeks ago, they were quite lumpy and big, and hurt when touched, and sometimes it burns when I urinate, there’s probaby around 5 of them around the vaginal walls.
Finally, I get a white/gloopy discharge in my underwear (even when I’m not on period/or aroused), it feels like I peed myself, and it smells quite foul. It causes great discomfort and embarssment!

Any answers or solution will be appreciated and considered!

    • ANSWER:
if it has a foul oder it could be some kind of infection. for the lumps i would go see a obgyn. tell them everything that has been going on.

  36. QUESTION:
Do I have a vaginal infection?
For approx. five years I have had thick, yellowish discharge. I never thought much of it since it was not accompanied by smell or itching, and I was not sexually active. I went to the doctors eventually, and he said it was not a yeast infection and didn’t mention any other problems.

Though, it has recently become much worse, and there is a foul odor along with it. I recently started taking birth control pills, and have been sexually active, but only with one partner and protection. If it was not a yeast infection, what else could it be? Because it’s only getting worse, and it is obviously not normal. Could the pills be causing the odor at least? Or could it have been a yeast infection and the doctor made a mistake?

Help greatly appreciated. I will be getting to a doctor again soon, but I’d like an idea of what I may be up against here.

    • ANSWER:
Hi- I like using www.webmd.com website it always lots of info, maybe if you try looking up ‘vaginal discharge whats abnormal’ and see what you find closest’s to you condition, then you approach your doctor with it and see what he has to say then. To answer the question about birth control- yes it can have some effects on discharge any where from smell, color,to texture.

  37. QUESTION:
Does this sound like a bacterial infection?
Please, this is hard enough as it is. If you’re going to be immature, hop off my question.

Im 15, female. I have this discharge, sometimes its clear, sometimes white, sometimes light yellow.
Usually its clear after a shower, white is during the day, and yellow is usually at the end of the day. It has a foul odor, but all the words ive seen is “fishy”, and i dont think it is a fishy smell, but it IS NOT normal. I can tell. Ive looked online and im beggining to think i have BV. I went to the family doctor a few months ago saying i thought i had a yeast infection and she very quickly asked questions, took a swab of my vagina, and said she saw yeast, gave me two pills to take and monistat and said it should clear it up. She also said that i was low on some good bacteria..i dont remember the name, but it was long. I recently read online that BV is cause when good bacteria is low, allowing the bad bacteria to grow more. Causing the abnormal discharge and odor. I dont want to seem like a hypocondriac and keep showing up at the doctor, because ive been there like six times in the past few months-for various reasons.

I live with my dad. So, its not that easy to tell him these things. Telling him to take me to the doctor for what i THOUGHT was a yeast infection was so hard and embarassing, so i think im just gonna ask him this time to take me to an gynocologist since they are experts at the female area.

Also, after i did the monistat kit, i started my period like the next day. It just so happens that i had my appt. at the same doctor for my 2nd Guardisil vaccine a few days after i went for the infection. She gave me my shot and asked if the medicines had helped. I was on my period, but my dad was sitting in the room. So i just said Yeah, because i reallly didnt know if it had or hadnt, since i was on my period. When i got off of it, things were fine for about three days. I was THRILLED that it had gone away. Knock On Wood. :/ It came back. This time even worse. The odor was super strong, and the skin around the vaginal opening burns. Like, whenever the discharge comes out, it seems as if its irritating the skin…Ill go wipe myself and it stops burning until more discharge comes. and discharge was stinky and it constantly comes out. It comes out so much to the point that im always wearing panty liners. If this has been a bacterial infection for the whole time, would the monistat for a yeast infection make it worse? Or do you think i had a yeast infection, it went away, then i got BV.?

    • ANSWER:
You need to see a gynecologist. There is a special test that can determine if you have BV.
If you have BV, Monistat is not going to cure it.

There are other conditions that may be causing your discharge to have an odor.’You could have a cervical infection (which can be effectively treated.)
You definitely need to be seen by a gynecologist to get to the root of your problem
There is no need to keep suffering. You can be treated effectively, but first you have to be properly diagnosed,
Is there any signiifcant woman in your life that you could confide in?
Otherwise, discuss this with your dad (I know this is kind of personal and difficult to do, but you really need to be treated better than you have been by the other doctors.
      Edit
You can request that you want to speak to the gyno by yourself.
      I wish you well.

  38. QUESTION:
Ladies-I want to know if it is possible…..?
Is it possible to have a strong vaginal odor without getting an infection? Like is it possible that the pH just got a little messed up? Im wondering because the past two times Ive had sex theres been this really strong smell, not fishy, not musky, not my normal smell. My man and I have recently started not using condoms, so can his sweat or something be causing the foul oder? I don’t think its an infection. No discharge, no pain, and when ever I use the restroom it smells normal. Oh and when were intimate the fluids look like they normally do, just really smelly. Should I douche and use something like rePHresh to restore the ph? Im thinking about doing that, and following the rePHresh for the whole twelve days, and if it smells after that then Ill take a PH test. But Im not showing any other signs of infection.
    Help. :(
    Thanks

    • ANSWER:
the problem may not be you it may be him. when you are not intimate or like you say buy your self better yet in the morning but not after having sex do you smell the odor?or if you wipe do you smell it?to be cretain insert your finger inside your vagina and see if it has an odor.if not its not you.is he circumcised, some men that are not have to be very maticulous about cleaning under the foreskin because the urine and bacteria stay under the skin which causes a foul odor.if he is circumcised than he may have some kind of infection ,and you didnt notice it when her wore a condom.i would insist he wear one dauring sex until you find out what the odor is from.some men do have a salty smell to their semen but it shouldnt be foul.something doesnt sound right and without some medical attention wich i strongly advise there cant be an exact reason for this odor. good luck.

  39. QUESTION:
    foul vaginal odor…help?
First i want to ask people to not be rude.
I wash GOOD, i make sure i do. And after a shower its okay for the first couple hours, but then there’s always a bad smell, sometimes I can still smell it even with my pants on. It scares me a little and its causing a problem with me and my fiance because i don’t want to have sex.
I’m having alot of discharge and im on the birth control pill yaz.
Theres no itching or burning, no rashes.
Does anyone have any idea whats causing this, or what i could do about it?

    • ANSWER:
This could easily be Bacterial Vaginosis, which is treated with antibiotics.

In any case, you need to see a Dr and get it properly diagnosed.

delaying treatment will make it harder to treat.

      Good luck :)

    • ANSWER:
diflucan is a 1 tablet treatment, the infection should clear up within 5days.
taking medication and pregnancy, can cause a yeast infection easily!

the whole yellowish chunk coming out is the infection.. you’re vagina is cleaning you’re body..

you probably don’t have BV anymore, its the yeast infection

wait a couple days before starting the other medication, you could get another yeast, which im sure you don’t want.

if you feel better within 5days, you’re okay.. call you’re doctor about keeping the other medication on hand.. i wouldn’t waste both medication and then the yeast infection coming back..

He or she will most likely do a pelvic exam and may order further tests.

    • ANSWER:
How Likely are You to Develop and Die From Cervical Cancer?According to the CDC, cervical cancer used to be the leading cause of cancer death for women in the United States. However, in the past 40 years, the number of cervical cancer cases and the number of deaths thereof have decreased significantly. It is believed that this decline is the result of many women getting regular Pap tests, which can find cervical pre-cancer before it turns into cancer.

According to the U.S. Cancer Statistics: 2004 Incidence and Mortality report, 11,892 women in the U.S. were told that they had cervical cancer in 2004, and 3,850 women died from the disease. The American Cancer Society mirrors these statistics, estimating that about 3,870 women will die from cervical cancer in the U.S. in 2008.

Well. We’ve already lost 18 girls, some as young as 12, in the effort to spare them from the mere possibility of cervical cancer later in life due to the terrible Gardisil vaccination. Others have developed debilitating and potentially life-threatening ailments within weeks of being vaccinated, and others still have had spontaneous abortions or given birth to babies with birth defects.

Also consider this: Cervical cancer usually develops in your late 20s to mid 30s. The protection period of Gardasil is estimated to be 4 years. That means, if you receive your first set of shots when you’re 10 years old, you’d need at least 2 to 4 additional booster shots to make it through your 30s. And THAT means you’ll have to expose yourself to the potential side effects of Gardasil over and over and over again.

But now to the real clincher, and I want you to read the following section as many times as you need to let this truly sink in…

U.S. statistics show there are 30 to 40 cervical cancer cases per year per one million women between the ages of 9 and 26, which is the age bracket that Gardasil targets (and was tested on).

According to Merck, Gardasil was shown to reduce pre-cancers by 12.2% to 16.5% in the general population. So, instead of ending up with 30 to 40 cases of cancer per million, per year, in that age bracket, the HPV vaccine can potentially bring it down to 26 to 35 cases of cervical cancer.

What that means is that you would have to vaccinate one million girls to prevent cervical cancer in 4 to 5 girls.

Further, about 37 percent of women who develop cervical cancer actually die from the disease, so vaccinating ONE MILLION girls would prevent 1 to 2 DEATHS per year, at the bargain-basement price of 0 million per year, plus potentially lifelong suffering for an untold number of women, which has no price tag. Is this REASONABLE?

There are more than 100 types of human papillomaviruses (HPVs). Of them, about 40 types of HPV affect your genitals or sex organs, and can cause genital warts, for example. 10-30 strains can lead to cervical cancer. The remainder can cause to skin infections and common warts on your hands and feet.

The CDC web site states that certain types of HPV can infect your cervix and lead to cervical cancer over many years. (This may be one of the reasons why cancer rates keep dropping, because there’s sufficient amount of time to treat any abnormalities if you’re getting regular Pap smears.)

It also says that in 90 percent of women infected, HPV clears up on its own within two years, at which point your cervical cells go back to normal. It is only when the HPV virus lingers for many years that these abnormal cells could turn into cancer.

Additionally, it’s important to know that the vast majority of abnormal Pap tests do NOT equate to cancer. Even abnormal Pap tests showing pre-cancerous cells of the CIN II grade clear by themselves without treatment 40 percent of the time.

And, current treatment of pre-cancers has limited the progression to actual cancer to only 1 percent. So, just like the polio vaccine, Merck’s HPV vaccine is coming out at a time when cervical cancer is already on a steady decline, and anyone who starts talking about how Gardasil has reduced cervical cancer rates in the next few years is likely talking absolute nonsense.

Gardasil vaccine contains just four types of HPV out of the more than 100 strains. So if you contract one of the 96+ types that aren’t included, you’re out of luck. And, if you’ve already been exposed to one of the four types of virus in the vaccine, it doesn’t work against those either.

This means that even if you accept the risks and get vaccinated, your chances of getting some form of HPV are still very high. Whether or not the HPV virus will lead to genital warts or cervical cancer, however, depends in large part on the state of your immune system.

Gardasil, on the other hand, can damage your immune system, and can potentially lead to death. The main causes of death include blood clots, acute respiratory failure, cardiac arrest, and “sudden death” due to “unknown causes” shortly after receiving the vaccine. Again, 11 of the repor

How could I have gotten tighter?
Okay – first let me list the many horrible symptoms I’ve been dealing with.

    - Depression
    - Hair loss
    - Ingrown hairs on legs and upper arms
    - Lack of appetite (And weight loss)
    - Very often tired and lightheaded
    - Sometimes a feeling of cut off circulation in a leg or arm
    - Migraines
    - Stomach pain
    - Extreme cramping on left side of uterus
    - Black stool with sometimes mucus (Yuck!)
    - Irritated around anus (Along with what seems to be a small hemorrhoid?)
    - Foul smelling yellowish green discharge (2 days ago, before period)
    - Brown discharge (On period, it’s usually bright red)
    - ^ Also smells more foul then usual
    - What seems to be a pimple under vaginal opening
    - Painless spots around vulva (Fordyce’s Spots?)
    - Lesions in mouth (iron deficiency?)

    • ANSWER:
Some of these symptoms, such as depression, hair loss, lack of appetite, very tired, lack of circulation, migraines, and even the period discharge color, may be related to stress. Unless you are sexually active, it is almost guaranteed it’s not an STD. The foul smell and discharge may be a result of a yeast infection which can occur for many reasons: stress, not changing asap after working out, sweating, sexual acts, etc. The “pimple” might be that. However, it sounds like an infection of some sort or a yeast infection gone bad. I recommend calling the doctor right away to schedule an appointment for the next available time. Let them know on the phone about these symptoms and they will do their best to get to you asap. Don’t wait another month or so. You need to call now.
